“I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.”

April 30, 2011 § 1 Comment

My academic life in København is very different from my academic life at CMU. As those of you who are familiar with my CMU life know, evenings and weekends are spent studying. Friday night is usually the only break (save for maybe an occasional dinner on Saturday), and even those Friday nights are filled with the woeful chorus of “I should be doing work!” School is comprised of exorbitant stressing, a plethora of assignments, and frequent deadlines.

As you have probably gathered, that is not the case here. I think that is the result of several factors, one of which is that I am not taking any science courses while I’m here, but I don’t think that explains everything. For instance, in the last history course I took at CMU, there was a biweekly essay due. In the analogous course I am taking here, there is just one essay due at the end of the semester.

Needless to say, my need to experience the awe/wonderment/enjoyment of everything else København has to offer kind of superseded my need to work on this one essay… so after a lovely day yesterday, complete with a nice lunch with a friend in the sun and an enjoyable party in the evening where I discovered I am very bad at dice and confirmed I am even worse at lying, I have sequestered myself in my room today to try to get an outline done for this darn essay.

The only way I could properly motivate myself to get it done today is to write to my professor and tell her I was going to turn an outline this weekend, thereby self imposing a deadline that I actually have to be accountable for.

…But then again, Nadine said she will text soon, and then I will go walk/bike/sit in the sun and be blissfully un-scholastic for another afternoon…
